Unlike millions of Americans who depend on publicly funded summer and after school programs, my bet is that worrying about after-school care never crossed his mind.
Hey Donny–most families don’t have nannies or private tutors or hired drivers to pick up the kids.
They depend on federally funded after-school and summer programs to keep their children safe, to help with homework, to develop new skills, and to provide healthy activities.
On the chopping block are the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which serve about 1.4 million children nationwide. It’s the only federal funding stream dedicated to afterschool and summer programs.”
Dumb decisions hurt kids
True to his long history of compassion and empathy for America’s children and families, Donny’s proposed budget for 2026 cuts funding for these important programs.

But that’s not all. The budget could cut funding for AmeriCorps, which is an essential part of the afterschool and summer learning programs. AmeriCorps gives young Americans the opportunity to provide community service, helping children with academic skills as well as coordinating STEM and arts activities.
A flimsy Excuse to cut funds
And why are these programs on the chopping block? A flimsy excuse: they are not working.
It would have been easy for Donny to discover the real research that these programs ARE working. It's right on the government website.
